For the 2002 World Cup, Colombia only managed to place sixth in the qualification round, tied with Uruguay but failing to qualify due to goal difference.

The team are nicknamed Los Cafeteros due to the coffee production in their country. The Colombian team has participated in six World Cups (1962, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2014 and 2018).
